Welcome to Venice

Hi Everyone :D

Venice is a city in northeast Italy which is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century B.C. The city historically was the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.

The Carnival of Venice is an annual festival. The Carnival starts 40 days before Easter and ends on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday or Martedì Grasso), the day before Ash Wednesday.Carnival started as a time for celebration and expression throughout the classes, as wearing masks hid any form of identity between social classes.

During the 1970s, the Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and sought to use the traditional Carnival as the centerpiece of their efforts. Today, approximately 3,000,000 visitors come to Venice each day for Carnivals. One of the most important events is the contest for the best mask, placed at the last weekend of the Carnival. A jury of international costume and fashion designers votes for "La Mascherapiubella". Here are the first prize winners of the last years:

2011 : "La FamilleFabergé" by Horst Raack, shared with "Omaggio a Venezia" by Paolo and CinziaPagliasso and Anna Rotonai, also the first prize for the special category 19th century to Lea Luongsoredju and RoudiVerbaanderd from Belgium
