Big Ben

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock of the Palace of Westminster in London.
On 12th September 2012 Clock Tower was officially named Elizabeth Tower because of Queen’s 60 reign anniversary.
It was built in 1858, after a fire in Palace and became one of the most prominent symbols of London.
The clock and dials were designed by Augustus Pugin.
The palace has got 1200 rooms and 3 kilometers of corridors.
To step into the tower you must pass by 334 degrees.
At every clock’s shield you can find a inscription “DominesalvamfacreginamnostramVictoriamprimam”. It means “O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First”.
Big Ben was inactive from 10.08.1976 to 9.05.1977 because there was a mechanical defect.
On 27 May, 2007 it stopped ticking for 90 minutes.
The strike of the famous clock is broadcast all over the world by the BBC.
Big Ben is an extremely huge clock. What is more, it is very precise. Twice a day the clock is checked by some officials from the Greenwich Observatory if the time is right.
Big Ben rarely goes wrong. Only once it failed to show the right time, when a painter who was painting the tower, hung a bucket full of paint on clock’s hand which slowed it down.
